Biography

Professor in physics.  He received a bachelor (1987), master (1990) and PhD (1997) in Acoustics from Nanjing University and a PhD (2000) in Applied Physics from Nagoya University in Japan. He was a JSPS fellow (2000-2002), JST senior researcher (2002-2003) and a Adjunct Professor (2005-2011) at Nagoya University. He is one of the first batch (2004) New Century Outstanding Talents of the Ministry of Education. He served as Deputy Director of the Department of Electronic Science and Engineering, Director of the Key Laboratory of Modern Acoustics of the Ministry of Education, Director of the Institute of Acoustics at Nanjing University; Executive director, Deputy Secretary General, Deputy director of the Branch of Detection Acoustics, Director of the Branch of Physical Acoustics of the Acoustical Society of China; President of the Acoustical Society of Jiangsu Province. He is also the deputy editor of Data Acquisition and Processing, the editorial board member of Applied Acoustics, Acoustics Technology and Piezoelectricity and Acoustooptics. He is a member of the Expert Evaluation Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and an expert of National Science and Technology Award Evaluation of China. He mainly engaged in the research of acoustic artificial materials and new principle acoustic functional devices, photoacoustic detection and acoustic signal processing, etc. He has published more than 400 papers in international important academic journals such as Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, Advanced Materials, Applied Physics. Letters, which are cited more than 8000 times, and  about 30 invention patents have been authorized. He won the Natural Science Award of the Ministry of Education, the Science and Technology Progress Award of Jiangsu Province and the Wei Rongjue Award of the Acoustical Society of China. More than 40 national invention patents have been authorized.  He has presided over a number of national major scientific research programs, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, key science and technology projects of the Ministry of Education, etc.  At present, more than 50 doctors and masters have been cultivated, and many of them have won the Excellent doctoral dissertation of Nanjing University, Excellent doctoral/Master Dissertation of Jiangsu Province. In 2022, Prof. Liu Xiaojun won the title of the first Top Ten Outstanding Graduate Supervisors of Nanjing University.

Teaching

Photoacoustics, Acoustic Measurement 

Research Interests

Based on the study of the acoustic signal generation, transmission, processing, control, series of the new mechanism and new methods have been found, which can break through the limitations on traditional acoustic measurement and imaging technology such as resolution, bandwidth, loss and provide the new principles for the next generation of acoustics devices and system. The main research fields are: (1) the regulation of acoustic field by artificial materials and the realization of related new acoustic functional devices, including the exploration of the working mechanism of Bragg scattering, local resonance, folded space and five-mode acoustic metamaterials. On this basis, acoustic functional devices such as super-resolution acoustic imaging, acoustic holographic imaging, strong directional acoustic antenna, low detectable acoustic stealth mask, acoustic logic gate and complex acoustic operation devices, acoustic energy flow regulation, coding acoustic metasurface, low frequency acoustic super-absorbor and high sensitivity acoustic sensors are realized. (2) Based on the development and innovation of photoacoustic imaging principle, we focus on the research of photoacoustic imaging in complex acoustic scattering environment, photoacoustic imaging with spectrum parameters, photoacoustic imaging under limited perspective conditions and other imaging mechanisms. On the other hand, photoacoustic imaging technology is used to solve practical biomedical imaging problems, including real-time imaging of microcirculation system, tumor imaging, dental imaging and so on.
