Abstract:
This seminar presents our ATLAS programme searching for new physics through top-quark decays and top-rich final states. The topics include searches for light charged Higgs bosons in \(t \to H^\pm b,\ H^\pm \to cb\) decays, heavy neutral Higgs bosons produced with top-quark pairs and decaying to \(t\bar{t}\), leading to four-top final states, and top-philic \(Z'\) resonances produced in association with one or two top quarks. These analyses exploit events with multiple jets, several \(b\)-jets, and one or more leptons, using data-driven background modelling and modern machine-learning techniques. The talk will summarise the physics motivation, analysis strategies, key results, and future prospects for top-associated BSM searches at the LHC.
Speaker:
Dr. Tu is an experimental high-energy physicist whose research focuses on understanding fundamental particles and their interactions, with particular interest in electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of particle masses, top-quark physics, and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.
She began her research career on the CDF experiment at the Tevatron as a Ph.D. student at the University of Pennsylvania, and later worked on the CMS experiment at the LHC as a postdoctoral researcher at UC San Diego. In 2014, she joined the University of Hong Kong, where she established HKU’s first experimental high-energy physics group and joined the ATLAS Collaboration. Now she is an Associate Professor at the HKU.
Her group has led and contributed to a wide range of ATLAS analyses, including searches for supersymmetry, flavour-changing neutral-current top-quark decays, four-top-quark production, and beyond Standard Model Higgs bosons. She has also played an important role in ATLAS muon detector upgrades as part of the Hong Kong ATLAS cluster.
