Department of Physics
Physics is the core fundamental discipline of natural science. As one of the top physics training bases in China, Nanjing University has been selected as one of the first batch of national first-class professional construction sites, with national science talent training bases, physics experimental teaching excellence center, and physics top talent training bases. In 2017, Nanjing University became the first batch of physics majors that received the Ministry of Education's top-level certification. In 2020, the program was selected as one of the first batch of the Ministry of Education's Top Talent Training Program 2.0 and the Ministry of Education's Strong Foundation Program. The department of physics has a large number of outstanding teachers active in the frontier of physics such as condensed matter physics, theoretical physics, optics, biophysics and soft condensed matter physics. They have made outstanding achievements in the frontier of physics such as high-temperature superconducting materials and theory, topological materials search, quantum communication and quantum computing, and Fermi quantum liquid. The department of physics has provided a strong faculty base for professional talent training. Over the years, the program has focused on the philosophy that foundation should be strength and research should be emphasized, published a series of excellent textbook with national influence, emerged a number of masters that impart knowledge and educate people, and also cultivated a large number of outstanding talents in the field of physics.
Department of Applied Physics
The Department of Applied Physics is based on the basic disciplines and aims to cultivate excellent talents who can create new technology. This major was born from the direction of applied physics in the School of Physics, and was formally established in 2017 in accordance with the national demand and talent training needs. Relying on the national science talent training base and physics experimental teaching demonstration center, the program has formed a base for training applied talents. The department of applied physics has a group of excellent teachers who are active in the frontier of applied physics such as material physics, optoelectronic technology, quantum science and technology, biomedicine, etc. They have made outstanding achievements in the fabrication of super flat graphene, high-dimensional quantum entanglement light source, the highest parallelism neuromorphic computing hardware, etc., which provide strong support for the cultivation of professional talents. Over the years, the department has focused on the cultivation concept of "thicken foundation and widen adaptation", and formed a series of resources used for nurturing students, which also provides a platform for cultivating interdisciplinary talents who can adapt to the development of multidisciplinary fields and engage in interdisciplinary research.
Department of Acoustics
The department of acoustics at Nanjing University is one of the first national key disciplines and the only national key discipline of "acoustics" in China, and has a key laboratory of the ministry of education for modern acoustics and a complete acoustics personnel training system covering undergraduate, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral degrees. In 1978, the Institute of Acoustics was approved by the ministry of education. In 2007, the key laboratory of the ministry of education was established. The discipline of acoustics was ranked at the first in "acoustics" in the national key disciplines evaluation in 2001 and 2007, and tied for the first place in the discipline evaluation of the ministry of education in 2012 (relying on the primary discipline of physics), and was rated "A" in the fourth round of discipline evaluation in 2016. In 2021, the department of acoustics was selected as a national first-class professional construction site.
Acoustics with distinctive "new engineering" characteristics is the most extended branch of physics, and is deeply intertwined with materials, electronics, artificial intelligence and life sciences, resulting in emerging directions such as acoustic metamaterials, ultrasound precision diagnosis and treatment, acoustic information processing and intelligent audio engineering. Over the years, NUIST has focused on the development model of "cross-fertilization of multiple disciplines, mutual promotion of scientific research and engineering innovation" and the strategic positioning of "basic research among the international frontier, high-tech research for national needs", contributing to national strategic needs and national economic development. Many of the acoustics researchers trained by NUIST have become academic leaders in related universities and research institutes, and have also provided a large number of professional and technical talents for related enterprises.
